What is different in New Castle County

New Castle County, reassessed in 2025 for the first time since 1987, gives homeowners 65+ an elderly exemption of up to $173,000 of assessed value from county property tax if income (not counting Social Security) is $65,000 or less and the home is assessed at $676,000 or less. A separate school-tax elderly exemption has much lower income limits ($15,000 single / $19,000 married); the county's 2025 form lists it at $32,000, and a June 2026 House caucus release says it has since been raised to $173,000. The state senior school credit (50% up to $500) and the disabled veterans school credit also apply.
